Book recommendation: 'Firms of Endearment: How World Class Companies Profit from Passion and Purpose'

17 Jun 2007

Hi guys,

Sitting on the tv couch this afternoon and spending the day inside in view of Sydney's wild weather. This gives me the great chance of reading up soeme great books that have caught my interest in the last few weeks.

At the moment I am recommending 'Firms of Endearment: How World-Class Companies Profit from Passion and Purpose' by Sisodia, Sheth and Wolfe and published by Wharton Business School. It is a fantastic book that I think are totally on trend with global developments that we have previously discussed on the Thinque Tank blog.

The book was released early this year and re-frames the category of business books that was previously dominated by Jim Collins 'From Good to Great'. The authors show how companies that truly in tune with passion and purpose and add value to all its stakeholders, rather than merely share holders are among the companies who have returned some of the greatest monetary returns over the last 3-, 5- and 10-year periods. The threshold to be nomimated a Firm of Endearment is very selective and amongst the companies who have made it into this list are innovators such as Google, Amazon, Ikea, Timberland and Macro Whole Foods. Of note is to see that none of Jim Collins supposedly great companies such as Phillip Morris, would make it into this list as their products are causing a lot social misery, whereas FoE are companies that are truly into win-win-win outcomes for all its stakeholders - employees, shareholders, clients, and supplies alike.

So have a read of this cool book that I believe is totally on trend.
