Career Advice from A Futurist Speaker

22 Dec 2015
What would you give yourself in career advice if you could go back in time? That was the question I got in this short interview by Westpac, one of my banking clients in Australia.

Transcript from the interview:

One piece of advice that I wish I'd gotten ten or even fifteen years ago in my career, I think for me would have been the kind of mantra that we sometimes overestimate the amount of change or transformation we can do in one year, but we underestimate how much we can achieve in ten years. I think that's a really good kind of basis for viewing that we can change everyday, but it's little by little, maybe only a 1% improvement, but over time that is going to give you a really massive compounding effect.

I think that perspective also helps when we view the external environment around us as well. Often times when we read a news paper, online or if we like in the analogue world we overestimate the kind of transformation that is happening everyday and maybe sometimes we get scared by that and we don't make the modifications to ensure that ten years, or five years or three years down the track we're really successful.

As a Futurist and Innovation Strategist I think this is a really interesting question, because it makes us think and reflect upon the challenges we have faced and what you could have done differently in order to overcome them more effeciently. For further reading about career advice check out this blog post - 2020 Career vision: A futurist perspective on the future of careers
