Future Trendspots (Sydney): The Importance of face-to-face meetings

19 Jul 2015

Good day, Anders Sorman-Nilsson here, global futurist, and the founder of the research think tank - Thinque - which is based in Sydney and Stockholm, today broadcasting from the fantastic boutique hotel, the QT in central Sydney.

One thing I have been thinking about while I have been busy helping different clients around the world is the power of events. In my most recent book Digilogue: How to Win the Digital Minds and Analogue Hearts of Tomorrow's Customer I argue that the importance of the face-to-face, connecting and coming together as human beings will only increase in the digital future.

The more digitized we go in the future, the more we have a need to connect in the face-to-face.

My travel schedule for the next month is quite busy as usual.  I'm going to visit different cities in Europe and in Australia, and it's all because I want to connect with people face-to-face, tell a message and share a vision of the future. One of my insights about this is that people more so than ever are coming together for the face-to-face meeting. Even despite global telepresence systems, web conferencing and aspects like Vine, Twitter and the ability to connect via video like this. People still love the face-to-face and crave analogue experience.

I like my Evernote app that I have on my MacBook and on my IPhone, but it still does not replace my analogue need and the feeling of taking notes in my Moleskine notebook.

And my experience from travelling 220 travel days a year around the world speaking at and attending to conferences tells me that events are making a lasting impact on the ability for organizations to inform their colleagues and customers about their brands.

But while information transfer can happen digitally, real transformation happens when we are in the face-to-face. Digital is fantastic for information. The analogue is necessary for transformation.

My conclusion is: the analogue still matters. Analogue events like conferences and working together in innovation hubs will enduringly be relevant in the future.
