How to choose the perfect Keynote speaker for your event

17 Oct 2016

In last week's blog post, 7 essential tips for planning a successful conference,  I shared my perspective on what you should think about if you want to create an impactful conference. Today, I'll share three essential tips to help you select the perfect keynote speaker for your event.

When selecting keynote speaker for your conference or strategy retreat there are so many more things than just the person's ability to attract attendees to consider. Of course it's beneficial to book a speaker with a well-known name that can work as a drawcard, but it's not sufficient if you want to ensure that the he or she truly contributes to the overall success of your conference.

In this blog post I'll encourage you to think about these three things when selecting keynote speaker:

  • Your audience
  • The agenda
  • Goals of your conference

Your audience

Anyone who understands marketing knows that the key to effective communication is a deep understanding regarding the receiver/ receivers of the message. It's important to adopt this thinking when choosing speaker also. As a first step it's important to put yourself in the conference attendees shoes and really think long and hard about what he or she would value. Ask yourself if the audience have a need for inspiration, practical tips or thought leading insights? It's of course often a combination of all of these, nevertheless there is generally one more than the other.

The agenda

What's the agenda and overall theme of your conference? Is it about generational trends, human resources, economic macro trends, customer loyalty, digital disruption or another relevant topic? Before selecting a speaker for your event I urge you to do some research and explore if the speaker you would like to engage for your event understands your industry and is capable of tailoring the presentation to your specific needs and challenges.

Goals of your conference

As I mentioned in the previous blog post, it's essential to reflect upon the goals of your conference and how the speaker could contribute to the achievement of those. Ask yourself if you want the conference attendees to leave feeling inspired or wiser than before. With a view to the longer and more holistical perspective it's wise to think about how the speaker can help you position your company and re-engage a curious, open-minded and future-focused corporate culture where ideas can grow.
