Ideas Boom To Drive Future Growth And Innovation In Australia

10 Dec 2015

On monday this week Malcom Turnbull released a innovation statement where he explained that the Australian economy is transitioning away from the mining boom. He argues that future growth will depend on a very different kind of boom - an ideas boom.

Thanks to the mining boom Australia have had economic growth for 25 years, but this will soon come to an end as the record commodity prices are receding. Turnbull emphasizes in this video that the key for future success, competitiveness and productivity is innovation

With the innovation package Turnbull wants to strengthen the collaboration between industry and researchers and also help SMEs bring their new ideas to market. These are two important issues since collaboration between industry and researchers in Australia is the lowest in the OECD and the number of SMEs introducing new ideas to market is also low in an international context.

Ideas Boom To Drive Future Growth And Innovation In Australia

Amongst the key measuers in the innovation package are investments for developing Australia's cyber security industry and also investments in a digital marketplace which will help small companies work with government.

According to Turnbull the purpose of the innovation package is to:

  • help innovative businesses access capital
  • help businesses commercialize great ideas
  • promote innovation across government
  • equip young australians with the skills they need to succeed in the 21st century economy

Furthermore the Australian government will invest $51 million in efforts that will help schoolchildren learn coding and help teachers learn additional skills. Check out this article 'The ideas boom': Malcolm Turnbull's innovation plan for further reading about the subject.

I'm excited to see what the impact of this innovation package will have on the Australian education system, the startup scene, future innovations and ofcourse the economy at large. My hope is that these efforts will foster a thriving environment for startups where new creative ideas and future-focused strategies can grow.
