The Future Of Pharmaceutical: Personalization, IoT and mHealth

28 Jul 2015

This is a short video from when I was a futurist keynote speaker at The Pharmacy Guild of Australia's conference APP 2015. During the event I talked about how the digitization will impact the future of the pharmaceutical industry. More specifically I focused on the following trends:

  • Personalization
  • Internet of Things
  • mHealth

As I have mentioned in several blog posts before, Netflix is a great example of a service that offer their users a highly tailored and personalized experience. Based on our digital behaviour, they know which actors, directors and which kind of narratives we like and that is why Netflix knew that House of Cards would be a success before the first season of the series premiered.

Secondly, I argued that all of our medical devices will be increasingly connected to the Internet of Things. Check out this video blog post where I explain the concept of the Internet of Things. One example of this development is the Scanadu Scout which basicly is a scanner packed with sensors that enables anyone to capture relevant physiological data. The device was recently launched in USA through popular funding. It's devices like this that will help us as users and patients to make smarter decisions in real-time.

Another new innovation in the pharmaceutical industry is PillPack. The company behind the brand is a pharmaceutical delivery startup which wants to create a better and more simple experience for the patient. The pills comes pre-sorted based on at which time throughout the day you should take them. This makes it easy for the patient and personalizes it and essentially brings the pharmacy online, not just as a product or as a pill but as a service that is contextually relevant to each unique patient.

What do we use mobile interfaces for? Tinder, Snapchat and Twitter, but this can change lives yet we don't use them in the right ways. Novo Nordisk was one of the first movers in this space using visual data in the Novo Pen enabling us to make smarter decisions at mealtime for example. And devices like this that use to be the exclusive privilige of say sports people are now enabling everyone to gain data insights about their excercise, health and food intake for example.NovoPen

The clothing that we will be wearing in the future will be able to monitor our health data and send those to our pharmacies. This will drive the adoption of mHealth which according to PwC is growing exponentially into the future. As you see in the graph below, monitoring forms the largest part of the forecast global mHealth revenue.

These are my and Thinque's insights about how digital is shaping the future of pharmaceutical.
